Neville knew that most people who made New Years' resolutions did so at the beginning of the calendar year, on New Years' Day. He, instead, chose to make resolutions at the start of the school year. Each year, on August thirty-first, the night before students arrived on the Hogwarts Express for the Welcoming Feast.
Neville dipped his quill in the ink pot, before beginning the list he wrote annually in the front inside cover of his teaching journal.
Neville paused, his quill making a large blotch on the parchment page. Professor Weasley – Ron's eldest brother, Bill – had suggested the new course at end of term the previous year. They would teach it jointly, doing some lectures together, and teaching others individually, depending on the subject matter. Neville was a bit nervous about the whole idea, since his own experiences in Potions had been far from positive. Who was he kidding, he was pants at Potions. Maybe Bill wouldn't notice...

- Treat all students equally, even the Slytherins (who don't see the point in Herbology, unless it is to learn about poisonous plants).
- Keep up-to-date on grading – don't save it for the weekend!
- Plan school trip to Wizards' Botanical Gardens in Romania for NEWT Herbology students.
- Start a Hogwarts' Gardening Club – students to help with tending the plants used for food, medicines, and Potions.
- Work on joint curriculum for the new elective course with Professor Weasley – Grow Your Own Potions Ingredients? The Herbology of Potions?
