Neville Longbottom had been teaching Herbology at Hogwarts for five years now and had just begun his sixth. He was comfortable with many aspects of his job, including the boring ones like grading essays and late night patrols for curfew-breakers. There were many tasks he found exciting, too, including teaching the NEWT level students, who were there because of an interest in the subject he loved.
Tonight, though, he felt as nervous as he'd been his first year teaching. He hardly ever had reason to venture down to the Potions lab in the castle's dungeons, but Professor Weasley – Bill – had invited him down for a discussion of the new course they planned to offer. Even though Neville had known of Bill before returning to Hogwarts as a professor, through his associations with Ron and Ginny, he still felt as though they were strangers in many ways. The Potions professor spent much of his free time in his private laboratory, experimenting with variations on the Wolfsbane Potion. Though not a true werewolf, he did experience mood swings, particularly at the time of the full moon, and had been trying to alter the usual treatment for lycanthropy to suit his own requirements.
Neville paused at the heavy oak door that led to Bill's personal laboratory. His stomach felt as if a flock of fairies had taken up residence in it – and if he admitted it to himself, it wasn't just the thought of potions that was making him nervous. It was the Potions Master on the other side of that door. Neville took a deep breath, and knocked.
The door swung open as if charmed to do so, and Neville stepped through into Bill's private lab. In his years as a professor, Neville had never had occasion to enter the Potions classroom, let alone this particular room. He'd expected to see a dark room filled with dusty jars of ingredients and cobwebs in the corners, but it was clean, bright, and the ingredients, as far as Neville could tell, were tucked away in the drawers and cupboards that lined all four walls.
“Professor Weasley?” called Neville.
Bill Weasley entered the room from a doorway Neville hadn't noticed when he first entered the laboratory. He wore faded denims that hugged his thighs and Neville forced himself to look Bill in the eye. “Please, call me Bill,” he said with a smile. “We are colleagues, and since we're going to be co-teaching the new class, we should really dispense with the 'professor' stuff, don't you think?”
“Okay, then,” replied Neville. “So, Bill, what do you think we should teach for our first lesson?”
