Neville awakened to the sound of rain pounding down on the glass roof of greenhouse five. He’d been up most of the night with his Mimbulus mimbletonia, which was getting ready to reproduce again. When it had appeared that the birth would not occur until the next day some time, Neville had snatched a couple hours sleep on a cot he kept in the greenhouses.

The dark blanket of stratus clouds hid the sun’s position from view, but a timepiece spell told Neville it was just past sunrise. He pushed himself up from the cot and went to check on his prized plant. A quick glance told him that it was almost time for the birth to occur.

Neville padded to the greenhouse Floo so he could give Bill his wake-up call. He’d asked to be present for the birth again – sometimes it seemed that Bill was as fascinated by the strange grey plant as Neville was himself.

“Bill! Wake up, love. It’s almost time.”

“I’ll be right there.” Bill’s voice was sleep-roughened, and warmth curled through Neville’s belly. Pushing the feeling away, for the time being, Neville began the preparations for the birth.

Bill arrived in greenhouse five just before the Mimbulus mimbletonia gave birth. As before, it was a messy process. The bulging boil that contained the next baby Mimbulus burst open, showering Bill and Neville with sticky goo – but at least it wasn’t Stinksap. Bill caught the small, grey plant, wiped off some of the goo, and potted it. Outside, the rain stopped, and a ray of sunshine finally broke through the clouds.
