your default icon: why spiders?
I took a course in entomology (insects) as part of my degree, and find all matter of creepy-crawlies fascinating. Pairing that with an Animagus!Snape fic of rakina's that featured Severus as a giant spider, and I was hooked on spider icons.

Cinnamon is one of my favourite scents, and lately I've taken to putting a cinnamon stick in the bottom of my travel mug - it takes the edge off the stronger-brewed coffee my hubby favours.

I wanted a winter-time icon, and found a set of photos of actual snowflakes - this is one of them.

Yesterday, I asked for subject requests for blog topics. I tend to stick to fandom-stuff, fic & other ramblings, so a lot of this is newer territory for me.

venturous asked me, "Why is your icon a spider?"

When I started this account (well, the LJ version of it, anyway) I wanted an icon that people would see and think of me, and I wanted it to be something that related to me, fandom, or ideally, both.

My original default was .
I thought the lightning looked a bit like a spell being cast, and I love thunderstorms.

When I joined the exodus to IJ, and found I had 100 icons with my free account, compared to 15 with my advertising-sponsored account over there... I started looking around for other icons that could represent "me" (and a whole lot of fandom ones, too).

I'd read a fic - I think by rakina where Snape's animagus form was a large, black spider, and started looking for pictures of spiders. Gotta love Google Image Search...

That's when I found this one (my current default). I teach biology, and while I didn't take a course in arachnids, I did take entomology, and enjoyed learning about the critters. So - it still works as fandom-based & representative of me, in a way.

The other spider icon, my red-kneed tarantula, was my attempt at a Christmas-version of my icon. I'm not really talented with photoshop, so adding a Santa hat or tinsel to the black spider was a bit out of my realm of expertise, so I decided to search for a red (or green) spider. The result, was this: . Who else but me would have a spider as a Christmas icon??

Make a list of all the characters in your icons. (Although you may have more than one icon of a single character, they only go on the list once.) Alphabetize it. Take the first two people on the list; that's your first pairing. Second two people; second pairing. Etc. Then write your reaction to each pairing (or a snippet of a hypothetical fic featuring each pairing).

Albus Dumbledore & Alex Hughes (Snow Cake) = weird. I don't see it, but I don't see Albus paired with anyone.

Charlie Weasley & Colonel Brandon (S&S) = I can see them making a go of it.

Draco Malfoy & Fawkes = very funny ... poor Fawkes, stuck with Draco.

Harry Potter & Hermione Granger = Sorry, but I don't see these two together. Hermione with Snape, or Draco (or even Ron) but not with Harry.

Lucius Malfoy & The Metatron (Dogma) = Considering the Metatron has no genitalia, that could be interesting ... hard to top or bottom if you've got no "bits", isn't it? But I can see these two forging an interesting relationship.

Neville's Boggart & Neville Longbottom = kinda funny, considering his boggart is Snape in a dress. Could be entertaining to watch.

Nymphadora Tonks & Severus Snape = actually, a believable pairing for me, more as a one-off than a long term thing. I read a fic that paired these two and it worked pretty well for me.

Sidney Freedman (M*A*S*H) & Weasley Twin(s) = LOVE! I read a M*A*S*H/HP crossover fic that had the Weasley twins modify a time turner & end up in Korea in 1952 and end up at the 4077th ... and Sidney turned out to be an American wizard. Loved it, and can totally see these two/three getting something going on.
